Getting Hired
Cover Letter Examples for Freshers
Three short templates you can adapt in 10 minutes.
Cover letters are not dead for fresher applications in India, especially at product companies, startups, and MNCs with structured hiring. Many ATS systems accept an optional cover letter field. A short, specific letter can differentiate you from hundreds of identical resumes. You do not need a novel. You need three tight paragraphs under 250 words.
When a cover letter actually matters
Write one when:
- The application has an optional or required cover letter field
- You are applying through a referral and want context for the referrer
- You are switching domains (mechanical engineering to software, for example)
- The job asks for motivation or "why this role" explicitly
- You have a non-obvious connection to the company (used their product, met someone at a meetup)
Skip it when the application is a one-click LinkedIn Easy Apply with no field provided. Do not attach unsolicited PDFs that nobody will read.
Paragraph 1: Hook with proof
Open with why this specific role interests you and one concrete credential. Bad opening: "I am writing to apply for the position listed on your website." Good opening: "I am applying for the Junior Backend Engineer role. I spent my internship building payment webhooks in Node.js, and I want to continue working on fintech infrastructure."
Name the exact role title from the posting. Recruiters handle multiple openings.
Paragraph 2: Map your experience to their requirements
Pick two or three requirements from the job description and connect each to a real example:
- "Your posting mentions REST API design. I designed and documented 8 endpoints for a campus marketplace project using OpenAPI."
- "You need PostgreSQL experience. I normalized a schema for 12 tables and wrote migration scripts for my internship project."
- "You value ownership. I shipped a bug fix to production in week two of my internship after catching a race condition in our queue worker."
Use the same vocabulary as the job post. If they say "TypeScript," do not write "JS."
Paragraph 3: Close with clarity
Restate interest in one sentence. Mention your availability (immediate joiner, notice period if interning). Thank them briefly. Add your phone number and LinkedIn URL if not elsewhere in the application.
Example close: "I would welcome the chance to discuss how my internship experience maps to your team's roadmap. I am available to start within two weeks of offer. Thank you for your time."
Three templates you can adapt
**Template A: Internship-backed applicant**
"I am applying for the [Role] position at [Company]. During my [duration] internship at [Company/Project], I [specific achievement with number]. I am particularly interested in [Company] because [specific product/mission detail].
Your role requires [Skill 1] and [Skill 2]. At [Internship/Project], I [example for Skill 1] and [example for Skill 2]. I also [third brief proof point].
I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to [team/product]. I can join [date]. Thank you for considering my application. I am reachable at [phone] or [email]."
**Template B: Project-heavy fresher (no internship)**
"I am applying for the [Role] at [Company]. I recently graduated with a degree in [Field] and have spent the past [months] building [Project Name], a [brief description] used by [users/metric].
The job description emphasizes [Requirement]. I [specific proof]. I also built [second project] using [stack], which taught me [relevant skill].
I would like to bring this hands-on experience to [Company]'s [team/product area]. I am available immediately. Thank you for your time."
**Template C: Career switcher or non-traditional background**
"I am applying for the [Role] at [Company]. My background is in [previous field], and I completed [bootcamp/self-study/certification] focused on [skill area] over the past [timeframe].
I have shipped [project] demonstrating [key requirement from posting]. I am motivated to move into [field] because [genuine one-sentence reason], and [Company]'s work on [specific thing] aligns with where I want to grow.
I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss my transition and what I have built so far. I am available for an interview at your convenience."
Formatting and delivery
- Plain text or simple PDF. No decorative headers.
- Match the tone of the company (slightly more formal for banks, direct for startups).
- Proofread company name and role title. Getting these wrong is an instant rejection.
- Keep file under 250 words unless the application specifies otherwise.
How long to spend per letter
10 to 15 minutes per tailored letter. Reuse the structure, swap paragraph 2 proof points, and update paragraph 1 and 3 for each company. Batch apply to verified fresher roles on fresherGO and write cover letters only for your top 5 picks each week.
